Blocked Drains
in Midrand

Blocked drains in Midrand are cleared once it is known whose they are. The first thing opened is the inspection eye, because a blockage past your boundary sits in Johannesburg Water's sewer and is reported, not rodded at your cost. Inside the boundary it is rods, a jet or a camera, priced first.

Whose blockage it is gets settled before anyone rods

Paying to rod a blockage that turned out to be in the municipal sewer comes up more than once in Johannesburg plumbing reviews.

A house drain runs from the gullies, basins and toilets to a connection with Johannesburg Water's sewer. When a sewer fault is reported, Johannesburg Water first establishes which side of the property it is on: the side it is liable for, or the side the customer is.1 The City draws the same line at the property boundary for water leaks.2

That makes the order of work matter. A drain machine fed in from a gully goes down the line until it meets the obstruction, wherever that is. If the obstruction is past the boundary, the hours of rodding, the camera run and any rods lost in the pipe were spent on a pipe that was never yours to fix. More than one Johannesburg plumbing review describes exactly that: rods stuck beyond the last eye, and the City clearing its own sewer the next day.

A drain machine goes wherever the line goes, including past your boundary.

So the first thing opened here is the inspection eye, not the drain. The last eye before the boundary is checked, and the municipal manhole too where it can be reached. If the eye is full and the manhole downstream is surcharging as well, the blockage is in the municipal sewer: you report it to Johannesburg Water and keep the reference number, and the visit is the only charge.

If the eye is full but the manhole is clear, the blockage is in the connection between them, and a camera shows which side of the boundary it sits on before money is spent clearing it. If the eye runs clear, the blockage is between it and your fittings, and that is the length we clear.

In a sectional title complex there is a third owner. The body corporate maintains any pipe that serves more than one section or the common property,3 so a blockage in the shared line carrying several units' waste is the scheme's, not one owner's. Only the branch that serves your unit alone is yours, and the managing agent should hear about the job before it starts.

Before anyone feeds a rod into your drain, ask where the last inspection eye is and what it shows. If the answer is the City's side, the right call is to Johannesburg Water, and the visit should be all you pay for.

How a blocked drain call-out runs

The order matters more than the machine: boundary first, then the clearing.

  1. Find the eyes

Gullies and inspection eyes are located and opened, starting from the boundary end.

  2. Decide whose it is

The water level in each eye shows where the blockage sits. If it is on the City's side, work stops there and you report it.

  3. Clear it

Rods or a high-pressure jet, chosen for the pipe material and what is in the line.

  4. Look if it returns

A camera run shows roots, a sag or a break, so any repair is priced on what is there.

  5. Run every fitting

Basins, showers, the bath and each toilet are run, and the eyes checked, before we leave.

How drain clearing is priced

The boundary check comes first, so you are never priced for the City's pipe.

ItemHow it is handled
Call-out feeStated before the visit. It covers finding the eyes and establishing whose side the blockage is on.
ClearingPriced once the blockage is located: rods for a simple stoppage, a jet for grease or silt.
Camera inspectionOffered when a drain keeps blocking or the cause is unclear, and priced before it is run.
DiggingOnly if the camera shows a broken pipe, and only after you have seen the footage and a written price.
The City's sideReported to Johannesburg Water. No clearing is charged on a pipe that is not yours.
After hoursAny after-hours rate is said on the call.

Blocked drain questions, cost first

Including how to check the City's side yourself before you book anyone.

What does it cost to clear a blocked drain in Midrand?

That turns on two things nobody knows until the drain is opened: where the blockage sits and what it is. You hear the call-out fee before the visit. Once the inspection eye shows the blockage is on your side, you get a price for clearing it. A camera run or a repair is priced separately, and only if it is needed.

How do I know if the blockage is in the City's sewer?

Lift the cover of the last inspection eye before your boundary. If it is full of water and the municipal manhole downstream is full too, the blockage is likely in the sewer main. Johannesburg Water decides liability by which side of the property a fault is on1, so photograph the eye and report it with that photo.

Who pays for a blocked drain in a sectional title complex?

If the blocked pipe serves more than one unit or the common property, the body corporate3. If it serves only your unit, you. Shared lines carry several units' waste, so check with the managing agent before booking.

Do you use a drain camera?

When it helps: a drain that keeps blocking, a line that smells with no blockage, or a suspected break under paving. The camera run is priced before it starts, and you see the footage.

My toilet gurgles when the bath drains. What does that mean?

Usually that the drain below both is partly blocked or poorly vented, so water from the bath pushes air back through the toilet's trap. It is an early warning, and clearing the line now is cheaper than clearing it after it blocks completely.

Do you dig up paving to reach a blockage?

Only when a camera has shown a broken or collapsed pipe that rods and jetting cannot fix, and only after you have seen the footage and a written price. Most blockages clear from an inspection eye.

Should I pour drain chemicals in first?

It is better not to. Caustic cleaners seldom shift a solid blockage, they sit in the pipe, and whoever opens the eye next has to work around them. If a plunger does not clear a single fitting, stop and ask for a call-out.

What if the drain blocks again a week later?

Then the clearing dealt with the symptom, and something in the pipe is catching waste: roots, a sag, an offset joint or a break. That is when a camera run earns its cost, because the repair can then be priced on what is really there.
